This chip bag broke the internet (and it's worth the hype)

March 15, 2025

Finding genuinely exceptional food doesn't always mean following the highest price tag - sometimes it means following a viral TikTok trend to a parking garage in Alexandria.

Like most Northern Virginia diners, you've probably experienced the disappointment of visiting a highly-rated restaurant only to wonder what all the fuss was about. Online reviews can be misleading, "best of" lists often equate "best" with "most expensive," and marketing hype rarely tells the whole story. That's why I personally visit every restaurant I recommend, applying the same rigorous standards whether it's a food truck or fine dining.

Today, I'll share my experience at Alexandria's viral sensation Flavor Hive, highlight Vienna Restaurant Week deals, and round up the most exciting new restaurant openings across NoVA.

  • Find out if Alexandria's viral "walking taco" lives up to the half-million followers hype
  • Get the insider scoop on 40+ Vienna Restaurant Week special menus (March 7-16)
  • Discover 19 new restaurants in Arlington and surrounding areas to add to your must-try list

Flavor Hive: Alexandria's Viral Street Food Sensation\

The Bag of Chips That Broke the Internet

My son and I recently made the 20-plus minute drive to Alexandria to check out Flavor Hive, the food truck operation that's generated quite the buzz on social media with their innovative "walking tacos." The concept is brilliantly simple yet utterly captivating: halal meat and toppings served directly in a bag of chips. This unconventional approach has earned them over half a million followers online, and after my visit, I can confirm the hype is justified.

Finding Flavor

Located at 5249 Duke Street in Alexandria, Flavor Hive operates out of a cluster of food trucks in what appears to be a parking garage side street. We arrived around 2 p.m. on a Sunday - according to Google, one of their quieter periods - and were grateful to find ample parking and only short lines. This was a stark contrast to reports I'd heard about their Richmond, Virginia appearance, where customers reportedly queued for hours.

The Setup

The operation consists of three open-windowed trucks plus a fourth that seems to function purely as a billboard, all sporting jazzy, modern, and colorful branding featuring their viral dishes and creators. The setup is functional but could benefit from clearer signage, as we initially found ourselves confused about where to start.

Insider tip #1: Head to the middle truck to pay, after which you'll be directed to either the left or right truck with your receipt for food preparation.

The staff, clearly accustomed to the flow issues, had devised a solution by sending team members through the line with mobile payment devices. We were quickly intercepted, able to place our order and pay without excessive waiting—a testament to their resourcefulness in managing their popularity.

The Menu & Ordering Experience

While Flavor Hive offers various ways to enjoy their halal meat - loaded fries, quesadillas, rice bowls, and pita pouches—we went straight for the viral sensation: the "walking taco." The ordering process comes at you fast, with staff rapidly firing options: "Do you want cheese? Rice? Fries?" These add-ons, while tempting, quickly escalate the base $10 price.

Insider tip #2: Be careful with the add-ons. Cheese adds $2, fries $3, and rice another $1. My son, overwhelmed by the barrage of options, said yes to everything and ended up with a carb-heavy combination of chips, rice, AND fries in his smaller bag. Our total came to $34 for two walking tacos with all the fixings.

After selecting our protein (lamb for me, ground beef for my son), we faced another round of choices: cilantro, lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, and both white sauce (garlic-based) and green sauce (cilantro-based). The server seemed genuinely disappointed when my son declined the white garlic sauce, suggesting it's a key flavor component of the experience.

The Main Event

The innovation here isn't just conceptual - it's genuinely delicious. My son brought a smaller bag of Lay's lemon-flavored chips, which quickly overflowed as they added the same generous portions they'd put in a larger bag. I opted for Pringles Bow Ties in dill pickle and sour cream flavor, thinking the tanginess would complement the halal meat.

Insider tip #3: Don't be shy about bringing a bigger bag. A family-size or share-size bag offers the ideal ratio of chips to toppings. Some creative customers even brought bags of mixed salad instead of chips—genius for those seeking a lighter alternative without sacrificing the fun format.

The meat itself was spectacularly good - well-seasoned, flavorful, and lived up to its reputation. Both my lamb and my son's ground beef were delicious, especially with the various condiments, seasonings, and sauces mixed in. The one structural issue was that with smaller bags, toppings tended to cluster rather than mix evenly—the cheese in one spot, the fries in another—requiring some strategic eating to get the full flavor combination.

The Vibe

What makes Flavor Hive special extends beyond the food - it's the experience. With no tables available, customers gather around car trunks or pickup tailgates to enjoy their food. This creates a uniquely communal atmosphere, as the messy nature of the dish discourages eating in cars or taking it home, encouraging people to stick around and share the experience.

The crowd was refreshingly diverse - younger folks dominating but plenty of parents with kids as well, everyone united by this novel dining concept. On our cool spring afternoon with the sun shining, the outdoor setting enhanced the experience. I imagine rainy weather would significantly dampen the appeal of this outdoor dining arrangement.

Portion Size

About ten minutes into eating, we realized we were only halfway through our bags and already getting full. The portions are genuinely generous - one walking taco could easily satisfy two people with modest appetites. We grabbed take-home boxes from the truck and brought the remainder home to share with family, though we were warned that soggy chips don't age well (and indeed, they didn't).

Final Verdict

Flavor Hive deserves its viral status. The concept is novel, the execution skillful, and the food genuinely delicious. Their ability to create a community atmosphere around what is essentially a bag of chips with toppings speaks to something more meaningful than just a social media trend.

While the pricing creeps up quickly with add-ons, the generous portions provide good value. The operation could benefit from clearer signage and a more structured ordering process, but these are minor growing pains for a concept that has captured widespread attention.

For anyone passing through Alexandria—or even those who'd need to make a special trip—Flavor Hive is worth seeking out. They also offer catering services and can bring the Flavor Hive truck to private events, which would undoubtedly impress guests whether or not they're aware of the operation's viral fame.

I'm already planning my return visit, next time with a bag of mixed salad as my base and a more selective approach to the add-ons. In a world of food trends that sacrifice substance for style, Flavor Hive delivers on both fronts.

That's it.

Next time you're looking for a dining recommendation in Northern Virginia, remember that exceptional food experiences come at every price point - from viral food trucks to neighborhood bistros to special occasion destinations.
